You know that YouTube is one of the top 3 search engines in the world, you know that click-through and page view rates go through the roof when video is involved. What you don’t know is how easy and budget-friendly it is to harness the power of video to market your company. We got this!

Equipment

Technology has advanced to the point where your digital camera or phone can produce high quality HD video. Invest in a camera rather than using your cell to prevent settings from being wrecked or fingerprints on the lens. A digital camera with HD quality video will run you less than $300, even less if you watch for a sale. That’s video camera or point-and-shoot. You probably have one right now. And get a tripod, that’s a must-have.

Pro Tip: Use a steamer to get the creases out before you film, or put a towel down before using an iron on your green screen to prevent damaging the fabric. After that, it’s a simple process to slip your logo in as the backdrop, or something complimentary to the video topic.

If you’re filming location is noisy it’s also prudent to invest in a lapel microphone, which run from $10 to $50.

Finally, you need video editing software. Do you own a computer? Does it have iMovie (Apple) or Windows Movie Maker (Microsoft) on it? Yes? You’re done. No? Download one of those, and if you’re computer isn’t compatible then it’s time to invest in a new computer.

To post your video use an existing platform like YouTube or (and!) Vimeo. Each one will walk you through the steps, they’re free, and you can embed the video onto your website from there. Include a transcription in the description for people who cannot hear or who don’t want to watch a video, and to get picked up in online searches.

Location

Forget a studio, you can film your videos right at your desk – and you should! Filming on location where the magic happens provides authenticity to your content, and viewers love to support mere mortals, entrepreneurs they can relate to.

If you’re filming a product demonstration, make sure your work area is clear. Move or cover up anything proprietary or confidential. Hide anything brand-specific such as team logos or motivational posters to prevent copyright infringement or like legal implications. Your own marketing products and logo are encouraged!

Topic

Product demonstrations are hot stuff. You know box opening videos the kids are going nuts over? Adults are just as interested to see close ups of everything that comes in a package, how to put the thing together, and how to use it. Informational videos are just as valuable. Bottom line, provide some sort of service or insight. In both cases talk to the camera, be aware of your posture, and don’t stress about a script. Have an idea of what you’re going to say, but talk to the camera the same way you would talk to a customer because you ARE talking to a customer. No need to reshoot if you say “um” or if you drop something. This video, a.k.a. “vlog”, is part of your social media strategy, it’s not a commercial.
